Alright friends, it's time to comment! You let me down a little bit when I asked about flossing (except Jill!)...so here's your chance to redeem yourselves. I just joined NetFlix and since Bob and I aren't too big into the movie scene (too busy watching Tigers baseball) I need your help with suggestions of good movies for me to see. I'm counting on you! Oh and if you want, you can throw in something about your flossing habits for good measure. :)

OK, I’ll be the first to step up to bat on this one. This is kind of hard for me because I love movies and really enjoy recommending them to people but we’ve been good friends for – what, three years now? – and I have absolutely no clue what kind of flicks you are into. Here’s a list of some of my all time favorite movies (in no particular order) from which you should feel free to pick and choose.
Gattaca – while technically science-fiction, it is absolutely worth watching over and over
Spellbound – a documentary about kids in the National Spelling Bee
Magnolia – one of my all time favorites but the language and subject matter can be hard to deal with, worth every minute of its 3-hour run time
Empire of the Sun – a beautiful film about a British boy caught in China when the Japanese invade during WWII
The Usual Suspects – a family favorite in the who-done-it genre
Bladerunner – if you can embrace your inner nerd (do you have one?) this is the best science fiction movie ever made
State and Main – very funny romantic comedy
Billy Elliot – British film about a young boy who just wants to dance
Dead Man Walking – the best movie I will never watch again
Emperor’s New Groove – I can’t help it, David Spade as a talking llama makes me laugh every time
Shower – amazing movie about the conflict between ancient traditions and modernity but in Chinese
The Emperor and the Assassin – really interesting movie about the first emperor of China with much less action than later movies on the topic, again it’s in Chinese
As Good as it Gets – another romantic comedy that is really funny and a little unorthodox
Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid – a classic that really must be seen
The Sting – a buddy caper that is still great
That’s probably good for now. I decided to leave off the obvious ones that are truly mandatory if you haven’t seen them yet (The Lord of the Rings, Star Wars, Indiana Jones, The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe) and the great baseball movies I assume you have already watched (Field of Dreams and The Natural).
P.S. I brush, floss, and listerine daily because I have already had one root canal and nothing is worth that again.
Here are some of our fav's:
The Wedding Singer
The Princess Diaries I & II
Rules of Engagement
A Walk to Remember
How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days (one of my all time fav's!!)
Save the Last Dance
Maid in Manhattan
Ocean's Eleven
The Wedding Planner
Sweet Home Alabama
The Rookie
My Best Friend's Wedding
Pearl Harbor
And if you're into TV series, Friends is the best!!!
Can you get TV series through netflix? That has been what we've enjoyed doing the past couple of years. We just pick a series in the store and start watching. Our favorites have been 24, Lost, and Gilmore Girls. I like them because I get disappointed when a good movie ends (just like a good book!), and with the series, you can put off that disappointment for a long time. And, you don't have to decide what to get next very often! Just move on to the next few episodes. If you can't do the series thing, then I will have to think of movie suggestions.
You've got Mail is one of my favorite movies--and if you end up choosing mine you have to invite me to come watch it with you! I know it's a "chick flick" but the writing is beautiful and it's actually a postmodern adaptation of Pride and Prejudice that I think is really well done.
p.s. Heidi Anne went to sleep today on her own in 10 minutes!
i really like these movies:
elizabethtown
pursuit of happyness
bourne identity
bourne supremacy
bourne ultimatum (but that's not out on dvd yet)
the notebook
shawshank redemption
for some reason, these are all i can think of right now.
as far as tv shows go:
arrested development
I can't really top Luke's list, and to be honest I'm still working my way through Luke's List of Must-See Movies, but here are some additions:
Almost Famous (best music)
Life Is Beautiful (sad but... beautiful)
Apollo 13 (for the nerd in me)
Jerry Maguire (best one-line quotes)
In Good Company (best recent good movie)
Oklahoma (classic)
The Music Man (classic #2)
Mission: Impossible (my fave action/suspense)
My Big Fat Greek Wedding (best romantic comedy)
Plus the XMen movies and Spiderman movies, when you're in the mood for them.
And, the comedies that got me through AFIT: Mean Girls, Legally Blonde, and Zoolander (you have to be in the right mood for these, and their hilarity grows with each late night study session during which memorable lines from them are repeated over and over)
Well, I am always nervous about recommending movies unless I know more about someone else’s own personal choices (of which I have no idea about yours)! But, here it goes:
New(er) recommendations:
Trust the Man
Blood Diamond
Casino Royale (especially if you are a Bond fan like I am)
Catch and Release
The Devil Wears Prada
Memoirs of a Geisha
Little Miss Sunshine
All-time personal favorites (does not include the obvious Star Wars movies, ET, Lord of the Rings, etc... that can go unmentioned...because who doesn't love these!):
Grosse Point Blanke
My Best Friend's Wedding
Notting Hill
Crash
Meet the Parents
Swingers
As Good as it Gets
Under the Tuscan Sun
Usual Suspects
Man on Fire
The Italian Job
Dead Poet’s Society
The Professional
Bridget Jones’ Diary
The Story of Us
(just to list a few - and in no particular order)
Some favorites of mine:
O Brother, Where Art Thou?
The Secret of Roan Inish
Pirates of the C: Black Pearl
Breaking Away (but, really, you must watch this with Chad and me)
Jeeves and Wooster TV series
Raiders of the Lost Ark
The Mummy
Pride and Prejudice (BBC miniseries and recent version starring Kyra Knightly)
Sense and Sensibility
Emma (starring Gwyneth Paltrow)
Clueless (watch this right after you watch "Emma")
Much Ado about Nothing (starring Kenneth Branaugh and Emma Thomson)
Dead Again (also starring Kenneth Branaugh and Emma Thomson. Slightly scary--I'd watch it with a friend)
Say Anything
Little Women (starring Winona Ryder)
Romeo and Juliet (yep, the one with Leonardo DiCaprio)
Snoops
Signs
Bend it like Beckham
Monsoon Wedding
Aprez Vous (in French, a very funny comedy)
For the whole family:
Chitty-Chitty-Bang-Bang
Beauty and the Beast
I've gotten good ideas from
www.rottentomatoes.com
They have reviews and "top 100" or "top 50" lists for various genres (plus entertaining "worst of" lists).
I'll only add one because you got so many other suggestions. We've suggested Sahara to many people and everyone loves it. Funny, adventurous... we love it.
Have fun!
So many good ones have already been mentioned. (Many others I am unfamiliar with because we're not too big in the movie scene either.) Anyway, I'm going to give an extra special ditto to:
Life is Beautiful
A Walk to Remember
The Notebook
The Shawshank Redemption
and I'm going to add:
A Few Good Men
Sabrina
Love Comes Softly (and the other 3 in that series)
Wild Hearts Can't Be Broken
wild hearts can't be broken!! i've recently been thinking about buying that. i saw it when i was younger, and really loved it. i need to see it again.
I LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE Wild Hearts Can't Be Broken!!! It's my all time favorite! You HAVE to watch it!!!!
Chinatown
One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest
Garden State
Shattered Glass
Tremors
Starship Troopers
North by Northwest
Roger and Me
I also like most of the movies on Luke's list.
